Trying to continue only Dental

Postby Hefty » Sat Mar 05, 2011 4:32 am

I have a question about where to turn next. My husband lost his job in June and about a month later called the HR person to ask when he should expect his Cobra info package. He was told by HR that they were sending it out the next day. When he didn't receive it within the next month he called again. This time no response. Sept (over 3 months later) we had still not received any information at all. I then called the HR Director and she said she would check into it. She called me back and said the package was on its way. We received it shortly thereafter and opted to continue only the dental coverage. We paid the premium due and have been paying the premiums on time each month since then and they have all been deposited. My husband had a dentist appt and they called us to say they submitted the bill and the claim was rejected due to us not having active coverage. I have gone to the HR Director again who did call me back and said she would check into the pro!
blem. That was 2 weeks ago. I called the company who manages the benefits and they just keep telling me that they have faxed the enrollment info and copies of checks to the dental insurer on 2 different occasions. The insurer says they have absolutely nothing from the benefit management co. I just keep getting told that it is someone else's responsibility to figure this out. I am so frustrated and do not know how to resolve this as no one seems to want to unravel the mess. The outstanding dental bill is about to go to a collection agency as I don't think they believe me any longer (after 3 months) that we really should have dental coverage. any help would be appreciated :>)

First to buy some time, send redacted copies of your premium payments (if
you get them returned back to you) to the dental office. Or maybe you can
print them online.

Next, send a certified letter to the health plan administrator (who may or
may not be the HR dept) outlining what happened. In it, threaten to report
them to the IRS and DOL. Give them a timeframe and if they do not honor
your request for coverage, turn them in!

If the IRS does not conduct a health plan audit and the dept of labor
investigator does not call them, you will have to sue for the medical bills,
plus $110 per day in damages.

With health insurance going up every year, you have no choice but to shop
around. .http://cobrahealth.com/healthquotes.htm

Click on the link, enter your zip code,
then click on the green "Get Rates" button. It's important not to apply to
just one carrier, you should find out what they all charge, and it does not
cost you anything but some additional time

If your former employer provided a health plan that included dental coverage or a separate dental-insurance plan, thye must allow you to continue that with COBRA continuation coverage. If the employer submitted to separate health insurance plans for medical, vision and/or dental coverage, you should be able to select which coverages you want to carry under COBRA. If you were covered for all three under one plan provided by your former employer in a bundled plan, you will probably have to elect to continue with the entire packaged plan (health + dental).

dental is considered medical care, so it would fall under cobra. If it was not included along with health insurance, you should be able to elect seperatley.
