If you lost your healthy insurance in anticipation for divorce, that is a qualifying event for spouses and dependents under COBRA. However, you must contact the health plan administrator within 60 days, so they can send you the election paperwork and be informed of your status.

You should have gotten an initial notice upon your spouse joining the company health plan that informed you of the 60 day requirement.

Good job, my ex wife canceled my health insurance while we were separated and didn't mention it. found out when I had a sports injury! Talk about expensive. I guess it would have been much cheaper to keep her.

Did you get a notice when you first got into the group health insurance plan? They needed to send you one. That explained potential rights, in case of divroce or separation.

If you are qualified, COBRA let recently separated employees to continue your group coverage by paying the total premium (+2% admin fee) = 102% for your coverage.
