Divorce from a dependent spouse with cancer

When an insured gets a divorce from a dependent spouse, and that dependent spouse has cancer, is the insured's employer required to continue coverage for the dependent spouse who has cancer? If so, for how long? If not, what is offered, or required by law in the state of California?

We have an entire page that deals with COBRA and Divorce

The dependent spouse losing her health insurance due to the divorce would trigger COBRA IF the health plan administrator was notified within 60 days of the loss of insurance because of the divorce, not simply un-enrolled from the health insurance plan. They may also try and get coverage elsewhere (if available), qualify for medicare, or remarry. There is also the State High Risk Pool, depending on where she lives and the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP).

Birth and total disability are two medical conditions I know of that will trigger COBRA coverage. Remember that COBRA is an entitlement benefit, and your ex would pay the entire cost anyway, so it won't cost you (also depending on your marriage settlement agreement).

Hope this helps
