How long does COBRA last?

Postby Shelley Long » Fri May 13, 2011 11:58 am

Most of our staff if getting ready to be laid off by my company and we were wondering, how long does it last? I see different dates, depending on status. Shouldn't it be the same for everyone?

Shelley

The theory is that non working spouses and children have less of an advantage when getting health insurance so they should be extended for longer periods. Cobra is temp health coverage that will run out one day. You will still need to get permanent. Coverage after the 18-36 months.

COBRA periods are 1.5 years for participants, 3 years for spouses and dependents.

Also if an ex employer dies or gets divorced, the surviving dependent or spouse may be able to extend their COBRA an additional 18 months.

LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE, THAT DEPENDS. 18-36 MONTHS IS THE NORM.
