No COBRA paperwork

Postby Anne » Sun May 01, 2011 3:51 am

When I was hired, I enrolled into the company health insurance plan. I was told to start paying premiums a month ahead of time, so that when and if we leave the company, we have one month of premiums already paid. But after I was terminated, I got notice from Aetna that my insurance was canceled on my last day of employment.

I have never received notice to continue my insurance coverage with COBRA. Help!

It sounds like you paid a lot of money for healthcare coverage in advance. What happened to the money? Your "extra" month should have been paid for, or that would be theft of your wages and you that is an issue with the DOL.

I was employed by a school district thru 3/31/11 and am no longer working, and now am on Cobra (my husband, also).

However, I have received no information from Cobra, nor do I know how to make our payment for May. (For April, my school district had us write the check to them and they were to make the April payment for us)

I want to verify we are enrolled and also get information about how to make payments as well as information about how Cobra works.

thank you,
Sue

Anne:

If you were terminated 44 days ago or longer, your employer is probably non compliant with COBRA. Send them a certified letter requested your COBRA entitlement.

Juanita:

You need to contact your health plan administrator for the status. The admin still probably has a week left, since it's 5/6 and they have 1.5 (44 days) months for get your the COBRA paperwork.

I wrote an article about when participants and employers / admins Sending COBRA paperwork

That must be pretty common, because I have lost my position in 1/17/2011. I have requested the cobra package several times and no avail. Now it is May and they tell me I was terminated from the group health insurance plan.

Companies who had at least twenty full timers on fifty percent of the business days in the previous calendar year are subject to COBRA.
