Are You Eligible For COBRA?


You may not qualify if you:

  • Don't return the enroll paperwork within 60 days of getting a COBRA final notice
  • Work for a church or church related association or college
  • Don't notify the administrator in 60 days after a divorce or separation
  • Don't pay the first premium after 45 days after electing
  • Move outside of your COBRA plan's coverage area
  • Get medicare, without contacting the administrator
  • Weren't enrolled in the group plan
  • Get private health insurance
  • Have a policy through an association
  • Are terminated for gross misconduct
  • Are a federal employee
  • Had an employer with under 20 employees
  • Had an FSA aka Flexible Spending Arrangement
All of these may cause you to not meet the requirements for extending under COBRA. Alternatives to COBRA are private health insurance, associations, another group plan, chambers of commerce, Pre Existing Condition Plans, State High Risk Pools, State mini COBRA and individual health insurance (if healthy).
