cobra for same sex couple

If you are eligible for COBRA

cobra for same sex couple

I worked for 7 years for a large employer and was laid off from my company and offered cobra to continue my health benefits. But my registered domestic partner was not given the chance to enroll, even though we made it clear to my employer what my lifestyle situation was, addresses, everything. Is this discrimination or legal to exclude my gay partner?

Patrice,

Same sex domestic partners are not considered "qualified beneficiaries" where employers are required to offer continuation of health care benefits under federal COBRA. But many insurance companies will treat your partner as a dependent. Also check with your state law, if your company has less that 20 full time employees.
