COBRA insurance problems (with solutions) I have gotten though Email

My husband and I moved to NY last summer from San Francisco. He is self employed and we joined a small association for a minimal membership fee and joined HIP. We found out that I am pregnant and decided that we would like to return to California before the baby is born, but we were told that we would be turned down for individual plans since I am already pregnant (pre-existing condition). We do not have a way of getting onto a group policy in CA before the baby is born.

Does the fact that we joined an association in NY mean that we might be eligible for COBRA? Is is considered a group?

How much is Cobra in Northern California?

What happens if the baby is born with any problems that require long term care, will we ever be able to get insured on an individual policy after COBRA expires?

Thank you for your time...

M. Robertson

Well, the association's health plan would have to have coverage in your new location / California. The problem with getting COBRA from your NY plan, is that there may not be any approved doctors in CA for you to go to. So it would not make sense to pay the premiums, but only have health care in NY. You probably don't qualify for HIPAA either. Do you have less than 18 months of continuous coverage?

You may try the AIM program here in CA if you are middle income.
