COBRA questions (with answers) I have received via Email

My husband was suddenly terminated from his job just two weeks before he was scheduled for knee surgery. When he went in for pre-op, he was told that his insurance through his employer had been cancelled. He has not received any word about COBRA coverage or any signed papers stating his termination from the company he worked for.

He is scheduled for surgery very soon, and I am worried about his coverage. We had to contact his former employer to find out any information about his insurance and they told us to call the insurance company. Will COBRA cover his surgery even if we don't get the official papers until after he has gone through the surgery?

I read on your site that it can take weeks to receive the papers to sign up. With a pre-existing condition, I feel that COBRA would have to be our option.

Well Skim, no need to worry, because you husband probably doesn't have coverage. Without signing papers or paying, he won't have COBRA. And if his employer plan has been canceled, they of course, won't cover him.

I would say, you should have him go down there, sign the papers and drop off the check.

Your employer is wrong about talking to the insurance company, there is only one person you should be talking to. The health plan administrator, deals with these issues, and it may be outsourced or the employer may do it.

If they were a decent company they would get this issue resolved quickly, but then, companies don't have souls, either!
