Bad situation...

My wife was fired on the 14th of February. On the day she was leaving she was asked if she wanted continued coverage for her and myself (I am a contract worker and an MBA student and I receive no health benefits at my work). Not even knowing the situation she said "probably not, it will be too expensive." We found that we will need COBRA and they are telling us that was the offer and now they don't think they can keep us on. Can we still get COBRA?
On another note... We were paying extra for my health benefits for me and they took it out on the 28th of February (the last paycheck) and now they claim that was for February coverage. Who pays for a fixed cost on the last day of the month??? They are ripping us off right???
