Most likely you will have some overlap with your COBRA plan. Talk to your health insurance administrator for COBRA to get the details about canceling. Usually you cancel a month at a time, since that's how the premiums are paid. But your contract may differ.
8 days is not bad to have redundant health coverage, considering your exposure without it.

: My family and I are currently covered under a COBRA plan through my former employer. Coverage under their regular and Cobra policies has been for a period of 18+ months. I am looking at a new employer whose program starts 31 days after hire. If I start on Sept 7 I would not be eligible until Oct 8. Since I have already paid Sept COBRA do I need to pay Oct as well for the 8 days?
