Short term disability and COBRA...

Hopefully someone can give me some guidance...

I have recently undergone back surgery and I am on short term disability at this time. I am being told by my employer that since I am "a current employee that is not currently working I HAVE to pay my own insurance premiums in full through COBRA". This does not make a lot of sence to me as they are telling me that they will continue to pay my insurance as they always have, then they will bill me for the full amount of the insurance through COBRA coverage. In their words "I have to reimburse my employer in full for keeping my health benifits". So this means they will pay towards my health insurance untill I need my health insurance? Then if I am on short term disability, due to a health related issue such as back surgery, I have to pay 100% of my own insurance premiums?

Today I received my bill from them.
