Coverage between job ending and cobra starting
My husband ended his job and coverage on 10/31/04 and just received certified notice from Cobra today (11/19/04). I am scheduled for an outpatient procedure on 11/23 that had been pre-authorized by my insurance back at the begining of October. But now, if my doctor calls to authorize this procedure they will tell them that I am currently not eligable. I know that Cobra takes effect after the last day coverage was suspended, but this seems to be a problem. My doctors office doesn't know anything about Cobra, they just want to know who to send the bill to.
What is customarily done in this situation? Should I bring them a copy of my Cobra application? Copy of check? How long does it take to know that my coverage is back after I send in the form? I really need this procedure now (in a lot of pain). Also, what would happen if a member of my family had to go to the ER during this time? Cobra is supposed to be available so that you don't have a lapse in coverage...but so far it's been 19 days since we have had insurance and right in the middle of a major medical problem. Does anyone have any answers?? Thankyou.
