COBRA question

Hello,

I am leaving my current employer who provides group insurance coverage. I am beginning a new job that also provides group coverage. I will have one week that will lapse if I do not elect COBRA coverage. I was told that if I allowed this lapse I could be denied coverage for preexisting conditions. Is this true? I am confused because I thought with group coverage I could not be denied benefits based on preexisting conditions. Basically, I am wondering what impact I could face in not electing COBRA and allowing a lapse for one week, other than the obvious if I had a medical emergency. I truly appreciate any advice you can give me.

Thank you,
Allison
