: Hi
: I recently left a job that I was at for 4 years and received COBRA paperwork from my former employer stating that my benefits were terminated on the same day as my last working day.
: Am I incorrect to assume that since insurance premiums are paid a month in advance that my coverage should have continued until the next billing cycle for insurance premiums. Whether it be 5 days or 30 days??
: Any information would be greatly appreciated

: Thank you

Kim,

In my area of the country, small groups (under 50 lives) typically have coverage that begins and ends on the first day of the month.

Larger groups can establish different rules for effective and termination dates. It is possible for the master contract to state that coverage begins on the first of the month and terminates on the last day of employment. Depending on how the contract is written, premium may be refunded on a pro-rated basis, or not at all, as it is assumed that it averages out over the term of the contract.

I have not found anything in the COBRA regulations that stipulates coverage must continue to the beginning of the next billing cycle after the qualifying event.

Beth
