The fallacy of COBRA is that it was meant to protect employees. In fact, COBRA was enacted to protect the government from having to pay for uninsured. The administrator has 14 days from notification of the qualified event to send you the information. You the have 60 days to elect coverage and an additional 45 days from election to pay retroactively. If you do all this, your coverage should be reinstated retroactive to the qualifying event date.

: My former employer told me they would be sending me a COBRA packet in the mail, as my last of employment was a week ago. I have yet to receive anything. What if I were in an accident today? How would I be able to pay the medical bills upfront?
