Delay in informing insurance company of cobra election
My employer was extremely slow in Cobra notification initially. My employment was terminated May 9, 2008 and insurance (Anthem) ran through May 31st. I enrolled in Cobra July 8th, as soon as I got the paperwork. I then paid my premium for the months of June and July on July 22nd. Today I went to a new doctor's office and had about an hour long discussion on the phone with Anthem and ADP (administrators of the Cobra plan). Anthem had absolutely no idea I was eligible for Cobra or any knowledge of my Cobra account. I was almost unable to see the doctor except that the ADP woman spoke to the nurses to inform them that I was indeed active and paid through on Cobra.
I just want to know if this is a common problem. Anyone else have a similar situation? I am extremely frustrated and upset because this wasted my time, the doctor's time and I was still unable to get any real answers. Is this ADP's fault for not notifying Anthem? Is there anything I can do to prevent this going forward or are there some regulations in place for timeliness in this matter? I mean, I'm paying $1000/month for insurance, I figure that not having to worry about my coverage questions is a reasonable expectation.
Thanks in advance!
