waiting for employee's to respond
An employee was terminated mid December 2008. They were provided written instructions for participating in COBRA that day. Coverage for the month of December 2008 had been already paid for so the employee's coverage was automatically continued through the end of December. January 2009 we had not heard back from the employee regarding whether or not they wished to continue coverage. February 2009 and we still had not heard back from the employee. It cost our small business a lot to continue the coverage for the 45 days that the employee has to decide. In the future can we cancel coverage effective beginning of the next month and re-enroll them if/when they elect COBRA or do we need to continue coverage for the entire period the employee has to decide?
