Cobra Cancellation

Can my previous employer cancel my Cobra health insurance coverage if I have been paying all along?"

I was laid off in September of 2008 and due to preexisting conditions had to get Cobra coverage. I have been paying them all along and on May 1st I learned that I had no coverage since 02/28/09. The employer said that they are no longer paying for insurance. Is this legal? I had sent them my check for March and again in April and they advised that they had not cashed them as they discontinued my insurance.

In conclusion, I had been without insurance for two months without any knowledge. I was able to obtain a conversion with proof of my payments to my employer but had to pay March and April at the higher rate ($350.00 more) in order to reinstate the coverage.

I know that they can cancel if they cancel all the existing employee's coverage but not letting me know is just not ethical.
