COBRA can be a dangerous and expensive lesson for your old employer. A labor lawyer might take your case on contingency.

If your old company is clearly in the wrong, I would send letters to both insurer and former company.

Include a deadline and mail them both certified.

: I was laid off end of May, 2009. My employer paid the medical and dental insurance premium for June, while they tried to extract from me my signature on a "general release" and non-competition agreement which I would not sign.

: I never received any official notice of my rights under COBRA for continuation and subsidy. At some point in July/August, after they realized I would not sign their "general release" and non-competition agreement, they sent me an email demanding I repay them the June premium and that pay all premiums after that myself.

: I now need medical attention and cannot afford to be without insurance. I do not know whether to contact the insurance company or my former employer. I thought about writing to demand my Cobra notice and election forms, but don't know if that's what I should do. If my insurance has been canceled, is there anything that can be done to reinstate it and how? All input will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
