You have to be covered on the group health plan on the day before the day of the qualifying event. So, for example, if your coverage was effective on April 1st, and you quit or got fired on April 1st, then you would not be eligible for COBRA. But if you quit or got fired on April 2nd, then you would be.

Any prior COBRA coverage would not be counted against you, once you are covered as an active employee again.
