Martha, a couple things...
The COBRA coverage would be exactly the same as your company group coverage. The only difference would be that you would be required to pay the whole amount (possibly plus 2%) instead of whatever amount you pay now.
Now whether they can require you to go on COBRA would probably depend upon whether or not you are eligible for Family Medical Leave. If you are eligible for FMLA, then the employer has to continue their portion of coverage for your 12 weeks of leave, so they could not require you to go on COBRA. But if you are not eligible for FMLA, then yes, I believe they can, since you would not be actively working and not entitled to those protections that FMLA affords.
