HELP - MOVING OUT OF PLAN'S SERVICE AREA

I'm retiring September 30th, exactly 18 months before I'm eligible for Medicare. Leaving New York to move to Florida. My employer's plan is the best of the Oxford plans (Freedom Select), but they do not cover the Florida area. If I remain in New York, I'm covered under COBRA for the 18 months, but I can't stay. I called Oxford and someone there told me that I'll still be covered but but it will come under the "out of network" part of the plan. This will cost me a little more because of the deductible and co-insurance, but still cheaper than trying to purchase a private plan, especially since I have a pre-existing condition.

Does this sound right, or is Oxford giving me false information? I'm concerned since the COBRA regulations say I may not be eligible if I move out of the plan's service area.

Thanks for any assistance from this board.
