Many private insurance companies won't accept you if you have a pre-existing condition, so if you did find one that would take you, it would just depend upon what premiums they give you and how it would compare to the cobra premiums. It would probably just be easier to take the cobra, since they cannot deny you the coverage. But if you want to take the time to shop around, it's always a good idea. Good luck.
