Unfortunately for you, yes, the insurance company can do that. Your employer has a contract with the insurance company and it specifies who is eligible for coverage. Since you are small and not covered by COBRA, I am sure that the contract does not contain coverage for former employees or any other continuation policies. So if you employer tried to keep you on, they would be in violation of the contract and they could cancel everyone's coverage.
