Congradulations on your husband getting a replacement in 3 days, that is a world record in this job market.
To answer your question, it really depends on what the plan rules state, you should have got COBRA notices when you joined with your SPD (summary plan description).
Companies are not obligated to cover your health insurance when you are no longer employed there. The good news is, you have 60 days to elect COBRA and 45 days to pay for it after the notice was mailed.
So if you have a claim before his new employers coverage becomes effective, you can enroll in cobra and pay the premium, and not enroll or pay for cobra if you don't need it.

: My husband left a job on Friday May 16, and we haev just found out we were only covered by that company until 5-31. His new employer will not cover us for 30 days after his hire, which was Monday May 19. Shouldn't his old employer have covered us for 30 days after his employment ended so we would not have to use the COBRA? This especially makes sense because no new employee has health care benefits for 30 days after hire.
