I am 56 years old and have had bypass surgery in December 2002. I am currently covered under my wife's health insurance. We are planning to become legally separated and I am planning to move to California. I am sure that my COBRA here in New York State does not extend to California, unless I am misled. The HIPAA guidelines state that one is not eligible for HIPAA unless he or she has exhausted his or her COBRA benefits. It seems as if I am between a rock and a hard place here. Does anybody have any experience with this type of situation? I am not disabled and plan to go back to work once I have moved. I just need to have insurance and Rxs for a few months. Thanks for any suggestions.
