Audrey,
I assume your son is under 65.
It's going to depend on whether or not your son is to be eligible for Medicare. If he is Medicare-eligible, then you will have to go that route and acquire a Pre-65 Medicare Supplement health plan to fill in the gaps under Medicare. It should be guaranteed-issue for him at the time he enrolls in Medicare Parts A & B on the Pre-65 plan.
If he is not Medicare-eligible, then you should look into coverage under HIPAA or a Conversion plan if his current group health insurance carrier offers one in Florida. Under HIPAA, he can obtain a guaranteed-issue individual policy that will cover all pre-existing conditions. Conversion coverage will also cover pre-existing conditions as long as the benefit itself is covered on the conversion plan. You really need to look at the benefits for both the HIPAA and Conversion plans and compare them carefully.
You should retain the services of a good local independent health insurance agent for this. It won't cost you a penny and the agent can direct you to the best plans and pricing for your son's situation.
