: I had to leave work in Mar.of 2003 due to COPD at which time I applied for ssdisability and am still waiting for an award letter. My insurance said I could extend my cobra because of disability but that I don't qualify now because I need to request the extention with an award letter before I went on I went on cobra. Now I find that a little hard to do because it can take up to 90 to 120 days just to get the award letter . Can you clarify this for me. It really sounds like a catch 23 to me to keep you from extending the Cobra.
You can't get the 11 month extension until you have been approved for SSD. Then you have to apply within 60 days of being approved. Be sure that your Award letter shows the date they consider you disabled. Mine didn't and Cobra gave me the runaround until I got a letter from SS
showing the date of my Disability. Be advised that your rate will go up considerably during the
exension period.
