I would say they need to find another group insurance carrier because that's simply not your problem. You have no obligation and they have no legal way to get the premiums from you.
If you are no longer employed there and are not enrolled in COBRA, you really have no concern with what their insurance carrier will or won't do for them.

: I had to elect COBRA coverage on the 60th day, I have a family, including a newborn. About 2 weeks after I notified the company that I elect COBRA, but before any payments were made, I was notified that I was approved for free state-sponsored medical coverage, and then a few days later I found a job. COBRA allows for 45 days from election to make the first payment. I notified my company that I didn't need COBRA, and they are saying I have to pay them for one month's coverage because their insurance company is only willing to refund them back 60 days from the time they were notified that I am no longer needing coverage. I incurred NO claims during this time. I told my employer I was fully prepared to pay in full any claims until such time that I paid the retro COBRA due. The worst that can happen if I don't pay is they cancel my coverage, which is exactly what I want to happen-I don't need it! Can my company make me pay any of that retro COBRA? I don't think I should have to pay, and they really shouldn't have signed me up until they received payment for the retro COBRA. They should know that if someone finds a job in the meantime, they're not going to pay...who would?
