I recently submitted my application for COBRA insurance to my employer. After turning the application in to the health insurance carrier, they received a fax stating the company would not insure me until my employer received my first payment. The human resources officer contacted the carrier explaining that I had an additional 45 days to pay the premiums. They understood that is the way the law was written, however, their company required payment up front or no coverage would be provided. I'm confused, does the 45 day rule apply to all health insurance carriers, or can they make up their own rules and get away with it??
