Hi,
My husband has a friend at work who's domestic partner has been in the hospital for some time now. The friend has to take leave often (hospital visits/child care issues, etc.) and she is running out of leave. In the State of Maryland, there is no Domestic Partner Law.
This situation is no different than any other with employers in that IF they "like you" or want to do something for you, they can always find a way to do it. If you can't take advantage of a "family leave" policy, some sympathetic employers might let a person take leave without pay or something else to accomplish the same thing.
I would appreciate any suggestions/novel approaches of how this person can request leave (this is a "plant" type work environment where you have a direct supervisor and a plant manager type position) if she needs it. I don't think she needs a block of leave right now , but the immediate need is just some breathing room to be able to handle things that happen in life when you now have one person instead of two handling things (school calls and you have to go get the kids/doctor calls and you need to have some type of medical consultation with them, etc.).
Thanks for any info,
Eve
