: The law does state that you have 45 days after electing COBRA to make the first premium payment, however the law does not require that the coverage be placed into effect prior to receiving your payment. Once your payment is received, then the coverage must be retroactively reinstated back to the loss of coverage date.
How quickly? I'm in a similar situation. My checks have been cashed and I'm still waiting. i have to pay cash for everything and I'm running out of money. Have lost patience! :(
