Cobra extension
My brother has Medicare Part A and B and has Cobra for his secondary insurance because his wife divorced him. He has been given 18 months of Cobra insurance in the divorce decree. My brother is a dialysis patient waiting for a kidney transplant and he has been on the transplant list for over three years. In his early 40's he has a genetic disease that caused his acute kidney failure over four years ago. We expect his 18 months of Cobra insurance to end in less than six months. A transplant center has informed us they will not transplant him unless he has a secondary insurance that covers his medications before and/or after a transplant and have taken him off their transplant list since he got Cobra insurance. Even though there are other transplant centers this still means that if his Cobra insurance runs out before transplant he cannot afford his medications...medications that are required to sustain his life. ONE of these medications cost around $600.00. It also means he will not be eligible for a kidney transplant in some centers.
Can his Cobra insurance be extend over 18 months and what do we do if so?
Sincerly,
dlondon
