I can understand that this is a scary situation for your family. I wish you all the best.

Is the group plan guaranteed coverage, or could they still deny the coverage due to his existing condition? How do the two coverages compare, both in coverage and in price? When is your wife quitting? When does her coverage end?

With the COBRA you have 60 days to decide to take it, and then an additional 45 pays to pay (altho you would need to make up the months missed during that time). So perhaps you could apply for the group coverage and see how that works out (if they will cover your son, what the premiums will be, etc) and then if it doesn't work out to your liking, you would still be apply to elect the COBRA and have that for 18 months while you find another plan.
