Health Care for Temps?

Hi there -- I'm sure that similar questions have been asked, but please help me out...I've gone without health care for about seven months now and I'm afraid of how much I'll be in debt if something bad happens unexpectedly.

I graduated from college in May (of 2005) and thus got kicked off of my parents' health insurance package.

People have told me to apply for COBRA, but I don't know that this is the correct program for me. I am temping right now so I don't have any chance of health care via my employer in sight -- what does one do in this situation??
